DEscriptttOR LISTS FOR IRISES, PEONIES AND DAYLILIES IN THE PRŮHONICE BOTANIC GARDEN.
Introduction
In 2015, the Council of Plants Genetic Resources agreed to include genus Hemerocallis (daylily) and genus Paeonia (peony) into the collections of genetic resources of the National Program. In addition to the selection of plants suitable for the National Program, we started to prepare descripttttor lists for these genera in cooperation with students of the Department of Horticulture Faculty of Agrobiology, Food and Natural Resources Czech University of Life Science, Prague. The descripttttor list was supposed to cover botanical characteristics of wild species as well as the advanced garden ornamental varieties, because
rnrnthe species of peonies and daylilieas are medicinal plants and it is therefore appropriate to incorporate them
rnrnin the National Program.
At the same time, it turned out that the descriptttor list used for Iris is intended primarily for bearded irises (Iris subgen. Iris). However, in the last twenty years, the Czech breeders have specialized also in other groups of irises, especially
rnrnin Siberian and Japanese irises and Spuria group, which don’t have any beard on outer tepals and have other differerent characteristics from the subgenus Iris. Therefore, we have decided to extend the existing descripttttttttor list to cover the whole genus except bulb irises.
Aim of the methodology
Aim of this publication is to publish descriptttttor lists and methodologies of characteristics descriptttttions to facilitate their use. Intention is to disclose experiences gained from own work while describing, evaluating and registering cultivars.
Descripttttor lists serve to describe accurately and unmistakably clones of species, hybrids and cultons (groups, varieties) of plants in culture. Particular descriptttttors partially correspond with taxonomic characteristics, but they are also specific to the cultivated plants. The publication presents descriptttttor lists for two groups of irises - the original descriptttttor list for bearded irises and a newly created descriptttttor list for beardless iris – and descriptttttor lists for peonies and daylilies. The aim is to enable a user of the publication to describe cultivars according to the submitted descriptttttor lists. Therefore, some problematic characteristics are explained in such a way as to make it easier for the user to apply them explicitly in the descripttttttion or identification of cultivars.
